NCDC Playoff Spotlight: Northern Cyclones

By James Murphy /, 03/13/19, 10:00PM EDT

The Cyclones finished the season at 26-20-3-1 with 56 points, putting them in the eighth seed for the playoffs.

The Cyclones were in 12th place at the Thanksgiving break just two months into the season. By the start of February, though, they had moved into fifth place overall, a huge climb through the standings for any team in any league - but in the NCDC, it’s the result of an almost unprecedented grind.

Here’s a quick look at them as they prepare to face the top-seeded Jersey Hitmen this weekend.

Head-to-Head vs Hitmen 2018-19

The Cyclones went 0-4-0-0 against the Hitmen this season, losing to them at home, 5-1 on February 9 and 5-2 the following day.

If the Cyclones pull off the hard task they face, here is how they have fared against the rest of the NCDC.

Vs. Junior Bruins: 1-4-0-0; Vs. Connecticut Jr. Rangers: 2-2-0-0; Vs. Islanders Hockey Club: 2-3-0-0; Vs. New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs: 3-1-1-0; Vs. Syracuse Stars: 3-1-0-0; Vs. Boston Bandits: 3-1-1-0.

Players to Watch

Defenseman Artyom Borshyov (‘00/Vitebsk, Belarus) led the team in assists with 22 helpers. Will Gavin (‘99/New Haven, Conn.) was also a scoring threat with 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points.

Between the pipes, Will Oliver (‘99/Chesterfield, Mo.) was 16-8-3-1 with a 2.85 GAA and a .916 save percentage.
