The Northwood School is headed to Grand Rapids, Mich., for the Tier 1 18U Nationals this week.
Northwood will play their first game Wednesday against Victory Honda at 7:20 p.m. After winning the Affiliates Division and going 14-1-1 in the USPHL regular season, 2-1-0 in the playoffs and then winning the New York State playoffs, Northwood enters the Nationals with an astonishing 48-12-3 overall record.
Head coach Chadd Cassidy believes his team will benefit greatly from the fact that, unlike many USPHL teams, whose players also play for their school teams and don’t get a chance to practice together as often, his team has an edge since they are a prep school team as well.
“We are a Prep School so our kids have practiced and played together all year,” Cassidy told USPHL.com.
In USPHL play, Tommy Bannister lead the team in goals with nine lamplighters and ponts with 22. He was tied for the team lead in assists with Cory Monds as both had 13 helpers this season. Drew Rose led the Northwood blue line in assists with 8 and points with 9. Fellow rearguard Cole Leal led all Northwood defensemen with four goals. Between the pipes, Ryan Wilson was 9-0-1-0 with a .95 GAA and .961 save percentage in USPHL play.
Northwood will also play Shattuck St. Mary’s on Thursday and Sioux Falls Power on Friday in the opening round of the round robin tournament. Cassidy and his team are looking forward to continuing their rivalry with Shattuck and know they will also face stiff tests in Victory and Sioux Falls.
“We have developed a pretty good rivalry with Shattuck over the past few years, so that is always a big game for us,” Cassidy said. “Victory Honda and Sioux Falls are both really hard working teams that play with good structure.”
