The Cape Cod Whalers U15 EHF Selects team is headed to Plymouth, Mich., for the USA Hockey 15 Only Tier 1 National Championships.
The Whalers finished atop the EHF Selects 15 Division with a perfect record this season at 8-0-0-0.
They went onto win the Massachusetts 15 Only State Championship and are ready to keep that success going after reuniting with some practices in the past week.
“We have had a handful of practices to get ready,” head coach Matt Collins said. “We went hard this weekend and now the kids are looking forward to Plymouth. This is a great opportunity to play the best teams in the country.”
As Collins pointed out, the chemistry and work ethic is immense in this team and that should help them on the grand stage.
“It's a tight group,” Collins said. “They love to compete. Great kids. We’re looking forward to this.”
Another aspect Collins hopes leads to success is the individual success many of his players had during their respective high school seasons.
“You saw great seasons for Zach Glass and C.J. Muntorio at Thayer,” he pointed out. “They both contributed with big minutes on a young Thayer team. Colin Norton, John Logan, and Declan Longnane had big years and contributed to a state championship for BC High. Longnaine had the game winner in OT.
“Conor Kelly and Alex Umbro had great years on an improved Archies (Archbishop Williams) team. Kelly had some big goals too,” said Collins. “Joe Freeman got big minutes as a freshman at Middlesex and Will Murphy continues to play a ton for Roxbury Latin.”
Glass and Longnane led the Whalers in goal-scoring with five lamplighters this past season and Logan led in assists with seven helpers and in points with nine. Between the pipes, Jake Inzirillo was perfect in EHF Selects games at 4-0-0-0 with a 1.09 GAA.
