After a 4-2-0-2 EHF Selects season, the 16U Cape Cod Whalers reunited recently to prepare for the 16U Tier 1 Nationals in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Prior to leaving for Grand Rapids, head coach Bob Beniers was hoping the little time he had to get his team back together and ready for the Nationals would help.
“With the majority of our U16 players attending local prep schools in the area, unfortunately their two-week spring vacation limited our opportunities to practice over the past month,” Beniers said. “We did have three to four very productive on ice practices over the past few weeks, mostly working on special teams and team concepts. Getting the kids together, reuniting the team, to start building the camaraderie, was so important before we left for Michigan.”
As Beniers pointed out, his team would also basically be going on advance scouting as Yale was the only team the Whalers played this past season.
“Being a half season team, we did not travel to any tournaments outside of New England in the fall, thus we did not get to see Anaheim or Honeybaked play, but we did play Yale and they are a very talented team and we look forward to playing them again,” Beniers said.
All of that aside, though, the Whalers were thrilled to be going to Grand Rapids and compete on the big stage that is the Nationals.
“Our team is very excited to be a part of the National Tournament and look forward to playing the best teams in the country over the next week,” he said.
Joe Kramer (three goals, four assists) led the team in points with seven. Jeff Lee had the most goals with five lamplighters and Ian Moore led in assists with five helpers. Between the pipes, Chris Demers was 3-0-0-1 with a 2.79 GAA.
