After a fantastic season and a great run at the 18U Tier 1 Nationals in Grand Rapids, Mich., the Northwood 18U team fell to the North Jersey Avalanche 4-1 in the semifinals Sunday.
Northwood fell behind 3-0 in the first period and could never recover. Daniel Colabufo made it 3-1 16:25 into the third period, but the Avs scored again to seal the deal and end the Northwood season.
Northwood was doomed by penalties in the semifinal as they allowed seven North Jersey power plays.
The Avalanche converted on two en route to the win. Northwood’s power play struggled going 0-for-4.
Ryan Wilson did all he could to give his team a chance, making 44 saves in the loss.
Northwood finished the tournament out-scoring their opponents 17-15 and with a 2-3 record.
Despite the loss, head coach Chadd Cassidy was proud of his team and their successful season.
“I’m really proud of how hard our guys competed today and this entire week,” Cassidy said. “We leave Grand Rapids with our heads held high knowing we gave it everything we had. The Avalanche are a talented, hard-working team who earned a berth into the finals. Best of luck to them.”
