The Capitals began their title defense on the right foot, as their early push on offense lifted them to victory over Carolina, 4-2, in the nation's capitol.
Alongside the duo of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, New Jersey Rocket alum John Carlson brought the energy by playing a key role to the Capitals early three-goal lead. By registering an assist each of Washington's three first-period goals, Carlson tied the NHL playoff record for most assists in a period (3).
