Stanley Cup Playoffs Alumni Recap: Carlson Ties NHL Record in Washington Win

Carolina Hurricanes vs Washington Capitals (Game 1 - WSH Leads, 1-0)


GAME SUMMARY 

The Capitals began their title defense on the right foot, as their early push on offense lifted them to victory over Carolina, 4-2, in the nation's capitol.

Alongside the duo of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, New Jersey Rocket alum John Carlson brought the energy by playing a key role to the Capitals early three-goal lead.  By registering an assist each of Washington's three first-period goals, Carlson tied the NHL playoff record for most assists in a period (3).

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Boston Bruins (Game 1 - TOR Leads, 1-0)


GAME SUMMARY 

For the second straight season, the Bruins and Maple Leafs are paired up for an Eastern Conference First Round series; but unlike last year, it is Toronto that has struck the first blow.  The Maple Leafs steal home-ice advantage after defeating the Bruins in Game 1, 4-1, at TD Garden in Boston.

Toronto defenseman, and New England Jr. Whalers alum (Now - Springfield Jr. Pics), Ron Hainsey led the Maple Leafs with 22:33 TOI and a plus-2 rating.

For Boston, the South Shore Kings quartet – Noel Acciari, Connor Clifton, Charlie Coyle, and Chris Wagner – combined for five shots on goal in just under 50 minutes of combined ice-time.

Colorado Avalanche vs Calgary Flames (Game 1 - CGY Leads, 1-0)


GAME SUMMARY 

A 26-save shutout by Calgary goaltender Mike Smith was all the Flames needed as they cruised to a 4-0 win over Colorado in Game 1 of their Western Conference First Round series.
 
Matthew Tkchuck led the Flames with a pair of goals, the first two of his NHL playoff career.
 
Calgary defenseman Noah Hanifin, the lone USPHL/EHF alum in this series (Cape Cod Whalers / South Shore Kings), aided Smith and the Flames secondary in the shutout effort with 18:51 of ice-time.
