DECATUR, Ill. – The Decatur Blaze announced today the signings of forwards and brothers Carter Smith Walker Smith for the 2019-20 USPHL season.

Carter Smith skated for the Blaze last season and is a 2000 birth year. Walker Smith is a 2002 and played for the Florida Jr. Blades last season.

Both are from Castle Pines, Colo.

“I am excited to return to Decatur to be playing for a top-notch program,” Carter Smith said. “I’m excited to continue my development in such a great environment.”

“We are excited to get Carter back and really look for Carter to step up his game this year as I feel Carter has more to give on a daily basis,” said Blaze coach-GM Zac Pearson. “I expect him to score over 20 goals this upcoming season.”

During the 2018-19 campaign, Smith tallied seven goals and 11 points in 38 games for Decatur.

The younger Smith is excited to join his brother in Blaze colors.

“Signing in Decatur wasn’t a hard decision for me to make,” Walker Smith said. “With pitches from Coach Pearson and my brother and his old teammates from last year, I heard nothing but positives about this organization. Nothing gets me more than the importance of player development while still having that drive and urge to win hockey games within a program. From what I’ve heard from previous players, that’s what’s most important to this program. I can’t wait to get this season started and work for a national title.”

Walker Smith posted four goals and 11 points in 24 games between the Jr. Blades’ 16U and USPHL team.

“We tried to get walker last year, but he chose a different team,” Pearson added. “Now, he made a good decision to sign with us. Although Walker is the brother of Carter, they couldn’t be more different players. I expect Walker to come in and be effective right away and use his skill to help be an effective player on our team and be a key contributor. The Smith brothers should be top players for us this year.”
