Toledo OH: The Toledo Cherokee traveled to Lewis Center OH on Friday evening to open the 2019-2020 USPHL Premier season to take on the Columbus Mavericks before a sell-out crowd and skated away with a 5-1 victory.
Rookie forward Zeth Stelmaszak (Temperance MI) opened the scoring for Toledo eight minutes into the first period with a power-play goal, Devon Dohanos (Sylvania OH) and Matt Gilbert (Wyandotte MI) assisted on the goal. Caleb Williams (Genoa OH) would give the Cherokee a 2-0 lead six minutes later Gilbert and Bryce Davis (Elmore OH) would earn assists on the even strength goal. Columbus would score with just under five minutes left in the first period to make the score 2-1 after twenty minutes.
Toledo would outscore the Mavericks 3-0 in the second period. Stelmaszak scored his second of the game with Alex Miller (Sylvania OH) and Paavo Sammalisto (Virrat Finland) assisting on the goal. Veteran Tyler Fox (Marshall MI) scored to make it 4-1 Mitch Dickman (Clyde OH) and captain Anthony Weinrich (Toledo OH) earned helpers on the marker. Gilbert added a goal mid-way thru the second period to give Toledo a 5-1 lead as they headed to the locker-room, Davis and Williams assisted on the goal.
"I thought our guys played well, we were a bit nervous at the start but once we settled in we controlled the game, our second period was our best of the night." Said head coach Kenny Miller
Neither team would score in the third period.
Toledo goaltender Chad Simmerman (Sinking Springs PA) made thirty-four saves on thirty-five shots to earn his first victory as a member of the Cherokee.
The Cherokee open the home schedule this weekend when they play host to the Detroit Fighting Irish (USPHL Midwest East Division) on Saturday night in conjunction with GTAHA day. Face off is set for 7:30PM. Admission for the home opener is a bottle of shampoo or body wash.
