The USPHL Florida Showcase kicked off and already there were some big shifts in the USPHL Premier and Elite landscape.

USPHL Premier

Florida Eels 5, Islanders Hockey Club 3

Maksim Tereshchenko (‘01/Moscow, Russia) went in on a breakaway and scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 3:53 remaining mark of the third period. It ended up giving the Islanders Hockey Club its first loss of the season, ending a 20-0 run from the start of the season. The Eels scored four unanswered third period goals for the victory.

Jared Figueroa (‘99/Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored two goals, including the insurance marker.

Hampton Roads Whalers 4, Tampa Bay Juniors 1

Jacob Kaplan (‘99/Bowie, Md.) scored two goals and added two assists, building on earlier December performances that saw him named the South Region Player Of The Week.

Florida Jr. Blades 7, Charleston Colonials 1

The Jr. Blades started fast with three goals in the first and three more in the second. Blake Tosto (‘99/Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scored a hat trick to lead the Blades, and the USPHL Premier, with 33 goals this season. Iacopo Granza (‘01/Villach, Austria) assisted on two of those goals.

Hampton Roads Whalers 5, Islanders Hockey Club 4 (OT)

Kyle Watson scored the hat trick, including the overtime game-winning goal, as the Whalers battled back from a 4-0 deficit to force overtime against the Islanders Hockey Club (20-1) and then win at the 2:45 mark of the extra session. What a way to wrap up Friday!

USPHL Elite

Hampton Roads Whalers 4, Tampa Bay Juniors 3

The Whalers started off the showcase with a big win over the hosts, as they look to move up the tough Southeast Division standings in the second half of the year.

Patrick Connolly (‘02/Jupiter, Fla.) scored his seventh of the season, which stood up as the game-winner. Three other Whalers also scored to secure the W.

Florida Jr. Blades 4, Charleston Colonials 2

The Blades’ Jacob Gusty made the most of his USPHL Elite debut, scoring two goals and one assist. Also with a three-point outing was leading scorer Matthew Scribner (‘02/Fort Myers, Fla.).

Hampton Roads Whalers 5, Florida Eels 1

The Whalers’ Tag Hilliard scored three goals to lead the Whalers to a sound victory over the Florida Division leaders.
