The Utica Jr. Comets used a quick start to the season to surge to the top of the USPHL Premier Northeast Division and they have maintained that perch ever since.
This past weekend, the team put a cherry on top of its solid season run, sweeping its Northeast Division semi-final series with 6-0 and 6-3 wins against the Buffalo Thunder to grab a spot at the National Championship tournament.
“We had an extremely good start to the season, and then had two players get called up to our NCDC team along with several others getting NCDC games which speaks to our team and organization and how we promote within,” said Head Coach Louie Educate.
While those graduations and a few other things made the road a little bumpier, Educate was thrilled to see the progress and said the team managed to pull together and stay on top.
“A few other big injuries after that where we had guys out for extended periods of time. We had to go through a little adversity and had some more ups and downs in the second half of the season,” said the coach. “Ultimately we were able to secure first place in our division where we stood all season. We are finally pretty healthy heading into Nationals and last weekend's sweep of Buffalo should give us some confidence going into the National tournament.”
That series sweep helped the Comets achieve one of the goals set at the start of the season.
