DETROIT – Most junior hockey franchises have local community support and the support of sponsors and fans alike.

The USPHL’s Motor City Hockey Club has that, and then some, with JJ Curran Crane.

A Detroit-based company since 1950 celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, JJ Curran has sponsored amateur hockey for over 60 years in the city and its surrounding areas, and also helped in the construction of both Joe Louis Arena and Little Caesars Arena.

“When I met (Motor City coach-GM) Jason McCrimmon through my weekly skate at the Troy Sports Center, I heard that he coached a junior team as well as managed a developmental hockey and skating program for kids called the Detroit Ice Dreams,” said JJ Curran president Jeff Curran. “Getting involved with his efforts did not take much thought at all.

“JJ Curran is a civic-minded company that understands if you take care of your community, your community will take care of you. It was a natural to try and help with Jason’s efforts to help kids achieve their dreams, especially in a year like 2020. Whether they are playing at the junior level, looking for a shot at the pros, or kids lacing up their first pair of skates, JJ Curran loves to help.”

The JJ Curran Crane company is a full-service crane rental company that provides lifting services for the city of Detroit with a fleet of over 30 cranes.

“Our skilled employees provide safe and efficient lifting services for our customers,” Curran said. “JJ Curran's equipment represents the latest in lifting technology from the industry's top manufacturers. We work heavily in the city's industrial and energy sector as well as in commercial real estate.”

McCrimmon noted that having a major supporter in JJ Curran helps make his job a bit easier, a bit less stressful.

“I'm beyond grateful to have JJ Curran as our main sponsor,” said McCrimmon. “Even more grateful with the personal relationship Jeff and I have built over the years, on and off the ice. JJ Curran as a company has dealt with so many key projects in the city of Detroit that has been monumental in bringing the city back to its true beauty.

“We are looking forward to wearing the JJ Curran logo on our jerseys for another season, with many more to come.”

Curran has become impressed with McCrimmon’s work ethic and coaching abilities with MCHC the past few seasons.

“I know how loyal and committed Jason is to his role in the programs he is involved with,” Curran said. “I appreciate how he keeps things fun for everyone around him whether he is playing or coaching. Jason is passionate about the game of hockey. It is a pleasure seeing him grow and succeed over the years.”

Currently 61 years of age, Curran said he still loves being at the rink as much as he can.

“I play with Jason and the guys in the Hogan skate on Tuesday and Thursday in Troy,” said Curran. “Many of the guys have been with us for over 12 years or more. I coached at all levels for 17 years as a head coach in local clubs, played travel hockey as a kid growing up for clubs in the Detroit area, and I have been a loyal Red Wings fan for as long as I can remember, 56 years at least.”

And with JJ Curran based in Detroit and McCrimmon born and raised and lives there, both can take pride in helping the city continue to grow and boom once again.

“Despite the city’s challenges, Detroiters never forget what their city means to them, and we will always take pride in our city,” Curran said. “All of us play a role in helping Detroit in its rise, not just people, but local businesses, too. For most of us, it is a small role, like being kind and helpful to your fellow Detroiters. Local businesses can give back to the communities that support them.

“The more Detroit businesses support local causes, whatever they may be, the firmer the foundation of our city becomes.”
