Foxboro, MA- On Tuesday, the South Shore Kings, Junior Bruins, Islanders Hockey Club, and Bay State Breakers converged on the Foxboro Sports Center for the first-annual Boston Bragpot Tournament.
Much like Boston’s famed Beanpot, the Bragpot will feature the same four historic rivals every year at a rotating venue. The first round is played on a weekday with the final and consolation game happening the following week.
In the first incarnation, the Bruins and the Islanders emerged victorious.
The Bruins triumphed 1-0 over the Bay State Breakers behind the combined 19-save shutout of Brian McGrath and Danny Tirone. Chris Miller provided the game’s only goal with an assist from Bryan Carter.
The Islanders and the Kings played to a 2-2 deadlock in regulation before the Islanders won in a shootout. Owen Powers tallied twice for the Islanders with both goals coming from Brendan vanRiemsdyk on the power play. The Kings’ goals were scored by Craig Skudalski and Connor Frazier with assists on both tallies by Tommy Bessinger. Mitchell Allen provided the lift for the Islanders in the shootout.
“[The four coaches] always wanted to do something like this,” commented Kings head coach Scott Harlow. “It gives the players something to play for early in the year. Aside from the trophy, we’re hoping to have the games count in the league standings next year. The teams have always had a great rivalry and this adds something to it.”
The Bruins will face the Islanders in the championship while the Kings and Breakers do battle in the consolation round. Both games will be at 1:00 PM at the Foxboro Sports Center and available on FastHockey.com.
