Hampton Roads Whalers USP3 Defenseman Commits to Mercyhurst

The Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers are proud to announce that 6'1, 210lb, 1996 USP3 defenseman Christian Johansen (Brooklyn, NY) has committed to play college hockey for Mercyhurst University in the fall. 
Johansen just completed his 2nd season with the Whalers, leading them to the USP3 regular season and playoff Southern Conference Championship.  Christian notched 1 goal and 9 assists for 10 points in 42 games for the Whalers and added 2 assists during the Whalers playoff run.  In two seasons with Hampton Roads, Johansen has skated in 69 games, tallying 13 points on 1 goal and 12 assists, including 1 power play goal and 119 penalty minutes.  Johansen finished 13th on the Whalers in points on the season, 4th among defenseman.

“I am proud to see Christian’s hard work and focus pay off”, stated USP3 Head Coach Brad Jones. “I first recruited Christian 4 years ago, and was happy to finally land him 2 seasons ago.  Since he has joined the team he has been a respected leader in the locker room and was able to focus his training throughout the offseason and into this year to bring out his best and earn this opportunity.  I wish him nothing but the best with the Lakers”.

"My time at the Whalers has taught me about myself and my capabilities as a ice hockey player", stated Johansen. "The coaches bring out the best in every player and really push us to get better day in and day out. I am proud to say I played for the Whalers". 

The Mercyhurst Lakers are located in Erie, PA and they compete at the ACHA Division 1 level.  Johansen will major in accounting.

Johansen becomes the Whalers 5th commitment for the 2015-16 season, joining Jacob Lainesse (Stevenson), Jacob Gerson (Utica), Dustin White (Bryn Athyn), and Radek Sawicki (Polish National Team).  The Whalers will be announcing many more commitments in the coming days weeks; stay tuned to for more commitment announcements.
