Jersey Hitmen 18U team went undefeated (4-0) at The USPHL’s Hitmen Classic this weekend outscoring their opponents 25-5 and climbing to number 19th nationally after a slow start to the year. The weekend opened up with the CT Jr. Rangers, Tyler Nielson started the scoring for the Hitmen in route to a 7-1 victory. Kavan Johnson stood tall in net turning away 14 of 15 shots, Nielson and Phipps finished with two goals, with three other Hitmen joining in on the scoring. The second game of the showcase featured a non-league match-up against the Metro Moose of the NA3HL. The 18U’s won 9-0, outshooting the Moose; 60-14.
Saturday’s matinee was between a UPSHL rival, the PAL Islanders. Just like the previous meeting this year, speed and physicality took center stage. The Hitmen again opened up scoring on a shorthanded goal by Greg Barnych assisted by Tyler Nielson on a quick moving 2-on-1 goal at 11:06 of the 1st period. The second period had the PAL Islanders scoring two goals by Brad Viola and Matt Minerva in a 2:36 span. Anthony DelTufo stole some momentum with a few saves to close out the period. In the game’s final stanza, the Hitmen scored a fast transition goal by Alex Phipps; Anthony Yurkins created a turnover at his own blue line and moved the puck to a speedy Ben Hurd who entered the offensive zone and then hit Phipps with a pass coming in late. Phipps finished it under the bar the tied the game at two. Energy began to shift as the Hitmen created opportunity after another. With 30 seconds to go Greg Barnych and Devin Pepe forced a turnover and moved the puck to Alex Borowiec who made a patient move around a sliding PAL defender and buried the puck behind PAL’s Anthony Porino. The Hitmen outshot PAL 31-25 with DelTufo getting the W.

In the weekend finale the Hitmen beat a tough Islander Hockey Club 6-2 with goals coming from Paganini (2), Neilson (2), Borowiec and Dressler with both Johnson and DelTufo contributing to the win in net. Next weekend the 18U Jersey Hitmen will meet York Skipjacks for two games at The Ice Vault in Wayne, NJ.
