Marlborough, MA (March 11, 2017)- Brandon Osmundson scored two goals and Liam Walsh picked up a goal and two assists to lead the Hampton Roads Whalers to a 6-5 victory over the Charlotte Rush and force a third game in the 2017 USPHL Elite Division Championship Series.
Hampton Roads jumped out to an early lead when Colton Seeman set up Brandon Osmundson, who lit the lamp 3:42 into the game.
Charlotte tied the game on a power play goal at 7: 59 by Tyler Dill from Shane Selan and Andrew Frojlein.
Matt Headland put the Rush in the lead with a goal assisted by Tyler Barrow barely a minute later.
Billy Brock responded with a goal set up by Andriy Denyskin and Liam Walsh at 10:54.
Osmundson’s power play goal from Walsh and Vaden McManus 3:45 into the second period put the Whalers in front.
McManus stretched the lead to two goals at 5:58 with a strike on a power play assisted by Brandon Zack.
The Whalers made it 5-2 when Deniyskin sent Brock streaming into the zone on a two-on-one. Brock spotted Walsh across the slot and sent him the puck, and Walsh knocked it home at 6:33.
Charlotte began a furious rally at 13:13 when Tyler Dill scored from Nicolas Yzaguirre.
Shane Selan’s power play goal at 14:29 from Yzaguirre and Andrew Frojelin pulled the Rush within one, and Matt Headland tied the game with a power play goal at 18:27 with assists from Gabriel Vanier and Tyler Barrow.
John Moncovich turned out to be the hero for Hampton Roads when he put the Whalers ahead for good with help from Billy Brock and Colton Seeman with 13:16 to play in regulation.
Charlotte pulled goaltender John Aureliano with 1:30 on the clock, but could not net the equalizer.
The Hampton Roads Whalers and Charlotte Rush will finish their series tomorrow at Merrimack College at 1:20 PM.
