The Steele County Blades are proud to announce that Josh Gouin has committed to play ACHA Division I college hockey at Waldorf University in the fall. Josh played parts of 3 seasons in a Steele County Blades uniform.
The Ft. Frances, ONT native played in 28 games for the Blades last year. In those 28 games, he logged 6 goals, 16 assists, and 34 penalty minutes. In his three seasons wearing black and orange, Josh suited up in 61 games and totaled 35 points from the blue line. He started each of his three years with Junior A Tier II teams throughout the Canadian Junior Hockey League.
Head Coach Nick Adamek had this to say about Josh’s choice. “We are so proud to list Josh as an alumnus here in Owatonna. He learned a never give up attitude while here. In his last year, he was the picture of consistency on the back end.” He continued “ Coach Shelanski is getting a well conditioned student athlete that will bring his big frame and defensive awareness in their inaugural season in the NAIA. We wish Josh the best of luck in Forest City!”
Waldorf Warriors Head Coach Brett Shelanski added “Josh is a very skilled defenseman who will help us immediately. He moves the puck well, makes good decisions and sees the ice well. Josh is a very intelligent hockey player and will be a significant contributor for us in all situations," Shelanski said."He plays with an edge and has a lot of grit to his game. Josh is tough in front of the net and in the corners and will help make us a more difficult team to play against. His toughness along with his skill makes him an exciting signing for us. Our coaching staff saw Josh play a lot this past season and he was a high priority signing for us and a great addition to our defense as we transition into NAIA hockey."
Josh Gouin feels “Playing in Owatonna for the past three seasons has helped me develop my skills on and off the ice. I feel as though I’ve become a better person all around; a special thanks goes out to my coaches and teammates.” He added “I am very excited to start the school year this fall in Waldorf University, as we look forward to competing for a National Championship.”
Waldorf University is located in Forest City, IA . Waldorf will become a charter member of the ACHA's newly-formed NAIA Division this year. They are coached by Brett Shelanski, who is entering his seventh season as Head Coach of the Warriors.
Josh joins brothers Soren and Erik Colstrup, and Goaltenders Tim Grounds and Mike Severson in committing to a school. Grounds previously committed to University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Erik and Soren to Framingham State University. Severson will be headed to Hamline University. He will join a Waldorf team that has former Blades Hunter Marsh (2015-16) and Alex Fleming (2012-13) on their roster.
