The Dells Ducks began a month long road stretch and snapped a seven game United States Premier Hockey League losing streak with a pair of wins in Hudson this past weekend.
Alec Scarsella fired a pair and Zander Zafiro collected his second shutout of the season, leading the Ducks past the host Hudson Havoc on Friday night in a 3-0 victory and the Ducks officially picked up its stuff and moved out of the league basement with a 7-4 win in Hudson on Saturday.
The Havoc also entered the weekend riding a losing skid, but they were unable to break out of it and things got worse for the home side as they also entertained the Minnesota Blue Ox on Sunday, stretching its losing streak to an even dozen.
Ducks 3 at Havoc 0
On Friday night the Ducks needed just one as Zafiro, 20, from Williams Bay, WI turned aside all 28 of the Havoc shots he faced.
Scarsella, 19, from Whitelake, MI fired the lone goal of the first period, near the halfway mark of the frame from Roger Schoenike, 16, from Sun Prairie and Jacob Cameron, 16, from Oregon, WI.
That goal stood up as the game winner and it was Scarsella adding some insurance himself with his second goal in the fourth minute of the final period as he converted a feed from the team's lone import, Jacob Soderstrom, 20, from Lidkoping, Sweden.
The other Ducks' goal came with exactly four minutes to play as captain and leading scorer, Stone Stelzl, 18, from Blaine, MN wrapped it up after take a pass from Colton Maynard, 19, from St. Clair, MI.
Ducks 7 Havoc 4
The Ducks wrapped up the sweep on Sunday as Soderstrom opened the scoring with an unassisted marker just 4:03 into the contest and the Ducks fed off that momentum, building a 3-1 first period lead.
The Ducks widened the gap to 5-1 before the home team struck back for a pair late in the second period. The Ducks added two more in the third before the Havoc finished the scoring 7:07 from the final buzzer.
This time the Ducks sent Corbin Moore to the crease and the 18-year-old from Fort Wayne, IN who has turned in several solid efforts this season was finally rewarded with a win following his 29-save effort.
Soderstrom, now fully recovered from a hand injury suffered earlier this season, fired three goals and added an assist in the contest while Stelzl collected his 11th and 12th goals of the season.
Scarsella picked up a goal and added two assists and the other goal came from Maynard.
Alex Weissenborn, out for several weeks with concussion symptoms returned to the lineup and the goaltender from the St. Louis area was on the bench backing up Moore in the second game of the weekend.
The wins boosted the Ducks' overall record to 4-12-1 and they will look to continue their climb back up the Premier Midwest-West standings in Chicago next weekend against a Cougars team that leads the Midwest-East Division but endured a rough weekend going 0-4 at a league Showcase event on the east coast.
The Ducks will enjoy some time off after next weekend with no games scheduled for the Thanksgiving weekend, allowing most players a chance to dash home to enjoy the Holiday with their respective families.
The Ducks will not be on home ice again until December 15-16 when the Steele County Blades come to town for a pair. Those will be the final games of the calendar year for the team!
