By Northern Cyclones Staff, 04/24/18, 11:15AM EDT

Congratulations to 1997-born goalie Drennen Atherton on his recent commitment to Sacred Heart University for the fall of 2018!

The Northern Cyclones NCDC team is proud to announce their 3rd Division 1 commitment of the 2017-2018 season. Long-time goaltender, Drennen Atherton has committed to Sacred Heart University for the fall of 2018. Atherton came to Hudson, NH four years ago from Florida to play for the Cyclones U16 team. Drennen was part of the organizations first ever U16 Full-Season team, where he help lead the Cyclones to 30+ wins that year. During his first season with the organization, he was even called up to dress in a EHL Premier game. He entered the game in the third period with the Cyclones down 4-1 against the Boston Jr. Rangers. Atherton would stop 11 of the 12 shots he faced and help the Cyclones beat the Rangers 6-5 in overtime.

The next year, Atherton moved up to the Cyclones U18 Full-Season team and again would find himself on the organization's Junior A  (EHL Premier) team where he went 6-3-1 witih a 1.87 GAA and .939%. In Atherton's third year with the Cyclones, he was a full member of the EHL Premier team where he lead the team to the league Semi-Finals and finished the regular season with a stat line of 16-10-0 record, 2.58 GAA and a .919%.

This past season the Winter Haven, FL native earned a spot on the Cyclones NCDC team. From his first start of the season, Atherton performed like one of the top goaltenders in the league. Drennen got his first start on October 1st where he stopped 30 of 31 shots and beat the defeding champions, Islanders Hockey Club in their own building. Atherton finished the season with a 18-11-2 record with a 2.61 GAA and .923%. His save percentage would be good for second in the league.

Drennen is very technical goaltender with great athleticism. When he is locked, there are very few players who can beat him. Sacred Heart will be looking for him to be locked in every time he steps on the ice, so he can contribute from day one.   Atherton is the perfect example of how the Cyclones develop their players and advance them through their system. With Drennen starting on the U16 Full-Season team, he is the first player to start his Cyclones career on a Full-Season Midget team and end his junior career with a Division 1 commitment on the Cyclones NCDC team.

"We are very proud of what Drennen has accomplished with us the last four years. We have seen him improve, grow, develop every day he was with our organization. He is one of the best goalies to ever come through our organization and we are excited to see what he can do at Sacred Heart the next four years."- NCDC Head Coach / Owner Bill Flanagan.

Sacred Heart University  is a private Roman Catholic University located in Fairfield, CT. Their hockey team competes in the Atlantic Hockey Conference, which is Division 1. This past season the Pioneers went 9-15-4 in conference and 13-22-4 overall.

The Northern Cyclones would like to congratulate Drennen and his family on this great accomplishment and wish them the best of luck in the future
