Winter Showcase Day 2: Shutouts, surprises and comebacks abound

Day 2 at the USPHL Winter Showcase saw a large amount of shutouts, comebacks and a few big surprises.

  

NCDC

 

New Jersey Hitmen 7, Islanders Hockey Club 5 - The Hitmen scratched and clawed their way back from being down 4-1 against the IHC team that defeated them in the 2018 Dineen Cup finals. Six unanswered goals scored between the end of the first and near the end of the third gave them the W. Tanner Palocsik had two goals and one assist, and Connor Tait scored the game-winner.

 

Northern Cyclones 4, P.A.L. Jr. Islanders 3 (OT) - The Cyclones scored the second come from behind victory of the evening in the NCDC. The Jr. Islanders were up 4-0 until the 11:59 remaining mark of the third, when the Cyclones began their comeback. Will Gavin scored the game-tying goal with 21 seconds remaining, and Zach Rehbaum scored the OT game-winner with 4:05 remaining.

 

Syracuse Stars 3, South Shore Kings 1 - The teams were even after the first period, but midway through the second, Griffen Sanom scored the eventual game-winning goal. The Stars are now 4-1 in their last five.

 

Boston Junior Bruins 4, Connecticut Jr. Rangers 2 - Sasha Peresunko, who represented Ukraine at the World Junior Championships in December, scored a goal and two assists, as the Junior Bruins won their second of the Winter Showcase.

Boston Bandits 5, Rochester Jr. Monarchs 0 - Joey Petruzzella scored two goals, and Connor McAnanama turned away 37 shots for the only NCDC shutout of the day.  

New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs 7, New Jersey Rockets 2 - Trent DeNuccio scored two goals and added three assists for the Monarchs. 

Premier

New Jersey Rockets 6, Potomac Patriots 1 - A five-goal first period, and two goals by Matthew Echelmeier propelled the Rockets to a big win to start Day 2 of the USPHL Showcase.

 

Niagara Falls Thunder 2, Steele County Blades 0 - Ryan Pascarella stopped 14 shots and Joe Shanley scored one goal and one assist for a 2-0 shutout win.

 

New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs 6, Detroit Fighting Irish 2 - Spencer DeRidder, in his first game with the Jr. Monarchs, scored a goal and an assist to help lead the Monarchs to victory. They moved up to 4-0-1 in their last five games.  

 

Hampton Roads Whalers 5, South Shore Kings 2 - Brandon Osmundson scored two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist. John Moncovich registered four assists.

 

New Jersey Hitmen 2, Midwest Blackbirds 1 - Artyom Buzoverya scored the game-winning goal with 3:59 remaining in the second half for the win.

 

Boston Bandits 4, Lansing Wolves 0 - Aaron Mercer earned the shutout and Will Kromer scored one goal and one assist.

 

Syracuse Stars 3, Chicago Cougars 2 - Henry Froass scored the game-winning goal in the first half. That put the Stars on a four-game winning streak.

 

Springfield Pics 4, Decatur Blaze 0 - Josh Miller and Mike Wilson scored a goal and two assists apiece, and Blake Carlson stopped 20 shots for the shutout.

 

Skipjacks Hockey Club 6, MJDP 1 - Brent Rickett and Bryan O’Marra scored two goals apiece and Jacob Hough stopped 29 of 30 shots in net.

 

Motor City Hockey Club 4, Jersey Shore Whalers 3 - Noah McNutt scored a hat trick and Kyle Banks scored a goal and two assists for Motor City.

 

Pittsburgh Vengeance 4, Boston Junior Bruins 1 - Defenseman Jeremy Jenkins scored two goals and are now 7-2-1-0 in their last 10 contests.

 

Carolina Eagles 6, Connecticut Jr. Rangers 0 - The Eagles’ Verners Fricbergs scored within the first 2:58, and Eric Daniel registered a 10-save shutout.  

 

Charlotte Rush 6, Northern Cyclones 1 - Billy Berry scored a natural hat trick for the Rush.

 

Islanders Hockey Club 2, Philadelphia Hockey Club 1 (OT) - Sam Dorfman, a ‘99 from Nashville, Tenn., scored the overtime game-winner.

 

New York Aviators 3, Richmond Generals 2 - Jona Hildreth scored the game-winner with one second remaining on the clock in the second half. That gave the Aviators their 16th straight victory.

 

Atlanta Jr. Kings 5, Niagara Falls Thunder 1 - Captain Cullen Rush scored a goal and two assists from the blue line.

 

New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs 3, MJDP 0 - Patrick McCoy scored the first and third goals, and Christian Heller had 24 assists.

 

Lansing Wolves 3, Connecticut Nighthawks 0 - Jeremy Skaife stopped all 23 shots he faced, and Brendan Smith scored a goal and an assist.

 

New Jersey Hitmen 7, Chicago Cougars 0 - Artyom Buzoverya, who represented Ukraine at the World Junior Championships Division 1 Group B tournament in December, scored three goals and two assists.

 

Metro Jets 3, Northern Cyclones 2 (SO) - Fredrik Meurling turned away 22 shots during team play and helped the Jets to a shutout win over a powerful Cyclones team. Conner Graham had a goal and an assist for the Jets. It was the Jets’ third win in a row and 10th out of their last 11.

 

Boston Bandits 5, Hampton Roads Whalers 2 - Vlad Pavlov scored the second and fifth goals for the Bandits, as they gave the Whalers just their second regulation loss of the season.

 

Twin City Thunder 7, Steele County Blades 0 - Jaxon Friedman stopped 15 shots for the shutout win, and each of Zachary Simpson and David Martinek had a goal and an assist.

 

Toledo Cherokee 5, New Jersey Rockets 0 - Bryce Davis and Spencer Sandberg had two goals apiece, and Mason Snyder turned away 20 shots for the shutout.

 

Syracuse Stars 5, Midwest Blackbirds 2 - Tyler Knicley and Tyson Rohrer had two goals apiece for the Stars, who have gone 2-0-1 in the Winter Showcase thus far.

 

Springfield Pics 3, Detroit Fighting Irish 0 - Gene Bouthiette scored a pair, and Martin Altrichter made 19 saves for the shutout.

 

Wooster Oilers 2, Rochester Jr. Monarchs 1 - Spencer Evoy had the GWG early in the game, with 13:57 left in the first half as the Oilers “D” held off the Monarchs from any further damage.


Richmond Generals 5, Boston Junior Bruins 1- Adam Krofchalk scored two goals and one assist. 

 

Hartford Jr. Wolfpack 4, Decatur Blaze 2 - Noah Gold led the way for the Wolfpack with a goal and an assist. 
 

Elite

 

Carolina Eagles 4, New Jersey Rockets 0 - The Carolina Eagles defeated the New Jersey Rockets by a 4-0 win, with David Blue earning the shutout, and Dylan Blue scoring the game-winning first goal.

 

Potomac Patriots 3, Boston Junior Bruins 2 (OT) - Will Walker scored the overtime game-winner and an assist for the Patriots, who are undefeated in regulation in their last three.

 

Hampton Roads Whalers 5, New Jersey Hitmen 0 - Greg Moon made 14 saves for the doughnut and each of Cody Wilson, Ruslan Abyanov and Nathan McNamara had a goal and an assist.

 

Charlotte Rush 5, New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs 0 - Julian Miranda scored two goals and one assist, and Luc Fox earned the shutout, his second of the weekend.

 

Richmond Generals 4, Boston Bandits 1 - Joey Sabatino scored the game-winning goal with two seconds remaining in the first half, for the Generals’ fifth straight win.

 

New York Aviators 8, Springfield Pics 2 - Seth Payson scored four goals as the Aviators broke a rough winning streak with their first win of 2019.

 

Team Beijing 5, Hartford Jr. Wolfpack 4 - Bowen Zhu scored two goals, including the tying goal, and he set up the game-winner with 3:33 remaining by Ethan Hou, who had his third game-winning goal of the weekend.

 

Northern Cyclones 3, Hampton Roads Whalers 1 - The Cyclones’ Matt Irwin scored all three goals for his Cyclones in coming back from a 1-0 deficit.

 

Atlanta Jr. Kings 2, New Jersey Hitmen 1 (OT) - The Kings’ Andrew Lawrence tied the game midway through the second, and Trenton Bailey scored the game winner 59 seconds into the overtime.

 

Islanders Hockey Club 3, New Jersey Rockets 2 - Jacob Mauro scored the game-winning goal with 59.0 seconds left on the clock.

 

Richmond Generals 3, Boston Junior Bruins 2 (OT) -
